Sankhu is a historical Newar town located in the north-eastern corner of Kathmandu Valley, approximately 17 km from the city center of Kathmandu. It has recently been declared as Shankharapur Municipality after merging three Village Development Committees (VDCs) namely Pukhulachhi, Suntol and Bajrayogini, and other neighboring VDCs. Sankhu had a population of 4,333 according to the 2011 Nepal census, living in 928 households.
Sankhu is famous for the Salinadi Sanctuary and the Salinadi Mela, which starts on the first full-moon day of the Nepalese month of Poush (January). During the month of Magh, Hindu devotees observe the Swasthani Puja, a month-long fast, and take a holy bath in the Salinadi River. It is believed that taking a bath in the river removes all past sins and wrongdoing. Sankhu is also a hub for cultural celebrations of the Newar community and a starting point for a trek to Nagarkot, where one can enjoy the stunning views of the Himalayan mountains.
